Your brain, faithful servant, will only retain information if you intend to use it.
In addition, it records what your body perceives, hence the importance of identifying which of the five senses you are most sensitive to.
Know that the auditory is lucky, it retains everything in its “echoic” memory (from the word echo).
And that the visual or “iconic” memory (of the word icon) is easier to develop.

Six easy exercises to practice at home or at the office to train you:

1. Remembering a place, a face: the four looks

It is a very effective concentration exercise.
Sit on a chair and observe the scenery around you from four successive points of view.
He sees the volumes, the shapes, the locations: the chair, the table, the armchair, the cupboard etc.
He sees colors, shades, shadows, light. The light wood of the table, the lighting of the floor lamp.
He checks that nothing has been forgotten, the three shelves in the cupboard, the green plant, etc.
He sees the detail that detonates and disturbs.
What allows to hang the memory. A red object on the desk is an anchor that will reactivate the memory of the whole.

2. Memorizing a written page: the ocular method

This technique consists in visualizing the information to remember: to-do list, CV of a candidate, name of a supplier etc. Then to direct the eyes upwards and to the left.
The objective is to succeed in recomposing an image perfectly conforming to reality. This requires going back and forth between the real image and the virtual image.
Practice on a lightly loaded book cover. John Fitzgerald Kennedy was an avid follower of this technique which he used before meeting people for the first time.

3. Remembering a busy schedule: categorization

It also involves viewing a list of disparate information and mentally organizing it into categories.
Examples: leisure, home, work etc. And inside, to group together as much as possible the similar elements: the SNCF ticket and the restaurant to be reserved.
For a sequence of unrelated words, classify them artificially: two words start with “a”, three with “f”, one with “f”. Thus, you give meaning and logic.
This is essential, because we only memorize what we understand. Then name these categories, list them: there are 5 categories, 3 elements per category.
Then record them visually and read them aloud. They will be encoded.

4.Storing a name or a code: by associations …

1. ideas: Your contact’s name is André? You can think of the shoemaker of the same name or the famous trumpeter Maurice André. This will be effective on one condition: be a fan of pumps or sneakers, or be a music lover.
The brain assimilates well what fascinates.
2. images: remembering brings emotions into play. Pick places, sensations, actions from your experience. We better remember what surprised us, excited us or that we already know. Think of Proust’s madeleine! For example, you can memorize the name of an author or a scholarly journal, remembering the first page that made you laugh so much. Citing your sources will no longer be a problem.
3. numbers: think of birthdays, department numbers, historical events. Here again, play on the personal dimension.

5. Remember a specific task:

the film scenario
At noon, you must telephone Sophie.
The reminder sticky note stuck to the edge of the PC may not be enough.
Do you make the film in anticipation, with incongruous connections. Put the scene in images, in movements, in sounds. Visualize yourself dialing the number, picking up the handset, talking.
Identify your feelings. Be specific during this mental video.
At the appointed time, your brain will remember. A tip, during training speak in the present and not in the future

6. Cultivate long-term memory: rhythmic repetition

Specialists have studied the issue.
Reviewing the exercise one hour after having performed it, and this for 10 minutes, allows you to keep the memory for the day.
Revise again the next day, for 5 minutes, you will keep it for a week. Come back a week later for 3 minutes, your memory will last a month.
And if you do it again a month later, the memory will be with you for a long time.
